Shahnameh: The Epic of Kings
The Shahnameh or “The Epic of Kings” is a series of classic stories about ancient Persia written in the tenth century by the poet Ferdowsi. For generations the stories of the Shahnameh have been narrated and performed at all-male coffee houses. Fatemeh Habibi Zad (Gord Afarid) is a trained archaeologist from Tehran and the first female performer to narrate the tales. Through her immensely popular adaptations, she has also managed to circumvent the Islamic Republic’s ban on solo performances by female singers.
